Our Verdict

The fee for the $20-$200 Five Back Visa gift card is $6.95. Buy two of them for a negative cost of $398.90 and rack up 2,000 Ultimate Rewards points on your INK. You also get 2% back in Office Depot/Max rewards if you’re enrolled, though rewards are capped at $200 in spend per quarter on gift cards ($4).

There’s also a similar deal on Visa and Mastercard gift cards at Staples 10/22-10/28. Hopefully, you have an easy/cheap liquidation method for these cards (reportedly, they work at Walmart as debit cards).

Recently, these ‘limit 1’ deals have actually been limited to one per transaction. Here’s wishing you a nice cashier and a lot of INK points!

Cleaned out my local OM on these cards yesterday after they restocked them. Lucky me! Friendly cashier let me buy 20 cards since it was the last day and pleaded to “make up for lost time” since they were OOS and also was on a trip 2-3 days earlier in the week. 🙂

I showed up at a store in eastern PA with my wife and the cashier told us the limit was “one per household.” Sigh. I told her we didn’t live together. I guess she didn’t look at our IDs too carefully, and she let us each buy a set.

Sometimes this game is just too hard. Or ridiculous. 🙂

It’s obviously a better deal for folks who live NEAR a OD/OM and can just pop in a few times during the week to buy more cards. Their only hassle is getting rid of the $200s! It still beats actually paying for your travel.

Agreed. Highly YMMV.
Store 1: I love these deals, can I buy another set? Sure. Thanks!
Store 2: No sorry, you can only buy 1 set per day
Store 3: Let me call my manager. No sorry, only 1 set per day per person
Store 4: Sorry we don’t have any in stock. There’s a gift card person that comes restocking… try again tomorrow.

How far can MS spending like this be put onto a Chase business card?

For example, assume one has a $30k credit limit on their Ink Cash Bus Card. Can one purchase $28k of the 5 Back VGCs without any push back from Chase?

I bought 3 sets of (2 x $200s) using 3 different INK cards (6 cards in total.) Unloaded 2 at WM and will unload the rest this evening at grocery store.

Any DPs on whether you can purchase 2x $200 OM/OD gift cards via MPX (for the 5x bonus on plat) and use those towards two FiveBack’s to get the $15 discount? Cashier was uncertain at the store around the corner and didn’t want to be stuck with $200-$400 in OD/OM gift cards and no way to liquidate.

No 5back cards at any of the local Office Depot here (Tampa).

My store was out too when I went in Monday. Associate said she received a memo that the promo will work for all Visa’s. I purchased two $200 Visa’s and no rebate was given at checkout. Manager explained that associate was misinformed.

Unlike the Staples deal, you can see the discount instantly prior to check out, which is why I like these deals much better – no delay in gratification. So the final bill comes out to be $398.90. If you’re not seeing that price before inserting your cc, something is wrong.

What area? Tampa near Brandon? Cannot stand going to the OD there anyway, so hard to work with. But, I may have to try rather then driving south on I-75. If their stock is gone, need to save a trip.

Thanks for reply.

DP: these 5 back cards work as normal debit cards at Kroger stores for buying MO (but only if your local Kroger still takes pin-based debit for MO, obviously – YMMV on that).

I’ve been to 2 stores in the DFW area and one had only 3 “five back” gift cards and the other has already run out as of this morning. I’m going to check a few other stores but it seems like this promotion is not going to be as lucrative as ones in the past.

Tell them to open the hidden door on the stand where they have all the gift cards. They usually have a lot more there.

Our local store searched through the card storage as we watched and they had none. Sold out the first day. Other locations never had many of these anyhow. Family was able to get only 3 sets of cards (6), but at least we got those. OM seems to be drying up in our area of Ohio and Blackhawk not restocking very well (not just with these soon to be extinct 5backs). Either that, or managers hoarding cards in an office and unwilling to sell them during sales. Strange. Last location that kept doing that and seemed to hate store promotions… some of us business owners banded together to pull our business from them and complained to corporate. They closed that location that year.

OMG thanks for this! No one to help me, so I checked myself. Plenty of unopened packs in there.

Can you use these on venmo?

Venmo stopped accepting Metabank cards. So the answer is no. You should think of buying an MO or use it for your regular spend.
