Avoiding Fees

Monthly Fees

Easy Checking

This account has a $6.95 monthly fee and is waived if you meet any of the following requiremnets:

  • Combined monthly direct deposits totaling $1000+ – or –
  • Average account balance of $1,500.- or
  • Account holder(s) age 65 or greater.

Gold Checking

This account has a $14.95 monthly fee but is waived if you have a U.S. Bank credit card. Many of us have a U.S. Bank personal credit card like Altitude, Flexperks, or Cash+ which would work to keep the account fee-free. Another option is to get the Gold account and get the fee waived if you have a good credit score and join the Because You’ve Earned It program.

Early Account Termination Fee

There is no early account termination fee to worry about

Our Verdict

We saw the same deal earlier this year. This is basically the best checking bonus that U.S. Bank offers, especially as it can be opened online. Definitely worth doing if you haven’t already done this bonus, we will be adding it to our list of the best checking bonuses. There is a $400 in branch bonus, but that seems to be YMMV. Might be worth checking to see if your local branch has that offer or not.

Assuming NYC would not work?

Unfortunately not. You have to be in a state with an actual branch.

I put my NYC address and it let me move forward to the next few steps of the application. I wonder what would prevent me from applying?

Let me know if anyone in NYC actually got an account! 🙂

I live in NYC and got denied after applying. I’m not sure if I got denied from Chex or if because I don’t live in their footprint. My Chex is OVER 60/24 but I have never been denied trying to open a bank account that uses Chex so I think my denial is from being in NYC.

Gadget 🕵️

Joey Doughnuts US Bank pulls EWS, not chex.

If you live outside a footprint state, you have to have a prior relationship with US Bank, such as a Credit Card, loan, etc. A few years back they did a nationwide deal, but not lately.

If you look through some of the comments on older US Bank DoC posts you will find this same info. NYCer K-Man

Gadget, you’re absolutely right and I knew that (about needing a prior relationship) from reading all the posts last year. That is what I get for applying really fast before thinking it through (because I’m trying to meet my annual bank bonus goal amount). I wasn’t sure if they pulled EWS or Chex though. Thanks for the information. Since it is EWS, it’s possible I was denied because of that because there were some banks I applied for and got approved for in the last month (that use EWS). Either way, time to move on to another bank bonus.

Well, they seem to have a 100% kill rate on apps out of footprint unless you have a CC or loan, or at least been a past customer. I think you are just the latest victim.

From what I have seen, when people call them up, they cite footprint, not EWS. Well, maybe if your reports are frozen, sure.

so, i would know after i submit my app if i can even open an acct? i would hate to jump through the direct deposit hoops just to find out that i didn’t even qualify bc of the footprint rule.

Gadget 🕵️

Nobody I’ve seen report that scenario, denied the bonus for being out of footprint.

From what I have read, they are denying the account application instantly, when you hit submit, if you are out of footprint and don’t have a prior relationship. If you have a past account, it is either instant approval, or “please wait while we review”.

Once/if you get approved, it doesn’t hurt to drop an SM just to verify your promo code is attached to the account. They had an issue once upon a time, January 2019, of not attaching codes because their website was embedded with the old code from a prior promo. That was fun trying to get that fixed.

i was declined and should have the reason within a wk. i read here that they use ews. if they care about new accounts, that could be the reason that i was declined. no bad debt, but i’ve opened a 4+ accounts over the past 2 months for bonuses.

Gadget 🕵️ – does a past account count if it’s closed currently? I have no current relationship with USB but have had their credit cards and checking in the past. Currently in NYC. Would that work?

Gadget - Bank Bonus Geek 🕵️

I saw a DP that said it didn’t work if the prior card was closed. I would try it anyway if you still have a online banking login. It appears the only surefire way would be to get a new CC from them first.

yvrite

I did. Already had the Cash+ card, so that may have been the reason.

Gadget 🕵️

There is no “may have”… it’s been a recurring theme. You must have a prior relationship if you are outside the normal service area.

Any idea as to whether a business credit card with US Bank qualifies as a prior relationship if you are out of the footprint otherwise?

Gadget - Bank Bonus Geek 🕵️

No, won’t work, per this DP.

I would try it if it were me, because there is little harm, and maybe they were denied for other reasons.

U.S. Bank $300 online checking bonus “is basically the best checking bonus that U.S. Bank offers” … U.S. Bank $400 in branch checking bonus “is better than the standard $300 bonus” … Hey? Make up your mind! https://www.doctorofcredit.com/ymmv-in-branch-only-u-s-bank-up-to-400-checking-bonus/

how does the direct deposit work? The only way direct deposit I know of is through a salary.

Are you eligible if you had business checking bonus within 6 months?

“received other U.S. Bank bonus offers within the past 12 months.” Does this include credit card bonuses? I can’t remember but I think I was told it is just bank bonuses but I can’t be certain. Anyone knows?

Do I need to unfreeze my credit reports to open bank accounts that do Soft pull?

Usually, yes.

DP: If you type your zip-code into the website on the locations page and there is not a BRANCH (not atm) within 50 miles then you are NOT in the footprint

I think I just got denied for this reason. “Unfortunately, your application was not approved.” No U.S. Bank in DC.

I live in Miami and was able to open an account and received bonus in 2014.

Gadget 🕵️

Duke I. Once upon a time, yes, S.O. and I were able to do the checking promo in 2016 from VA, with no local branches…

BUT, they shut that down in the recent promos. Read some of the user comments on this DoC article: https://www.doctorofcredit.com/u-s-bank-300-online-checking-bonus-2/, esp. the older ones.

Once you have a prior relationship, you can be out of footprint and get approved. S.O. and I churned this bonus earlier this year, with open or recently closed US Bank CC’s. Brandon

My application was declined. I don’t know why checking account application would be denied. I live in Houston, TX and there are no US bank branches here. Is that the reason?

I was approved in Dallas and have the bonus already. Although I did have a US Bank credit card so i think that helped.

How does household limit apply? Will this one be considered as the same one in August?

Svy

Bump – if I opened a checking account for bonus in May 2018, would my spouse qualify at the same address now? Any word on whether green card holders would approved similar to US Citizens? TIA!

Gadget 🕵️

Green card – one DP: https://www.doctorofcredit.com/u-s-bank-300-online-checking-bonus-2/#comment-799341

But, unless your spouse has a prior relationship, your not getting approved in VA. Maybe if you have a USB CC and make them an AU… so they are recognized.

I have the same question. If P2 qualifies.

After multiple attempts, I was finally approved for the gold checking account. Obtaining a cash plus CC back in September helped.
