Our Verdict

This offer comes out regularly, this time I’ve only seen a cash offer so far, no MR points offer.

Important to keep in mind this only works for prepaid hotel bookings and not flights; you also need to spend $600 in a single purchase. Would be so much more useful if it included flights as it’s much easier to get discounts on hotels. Also, if you’re booking at the larger chain hotels then you need to book directly to get elite night credits, have your status recognized, and earn points.

Some people like to book hotels through Hotels.com and get 20%+ off with ease, and up to ~35% with discounted gift cards while this American Express discount is only slightly over 16.5%. Offer is a bit better on Platinum cards as they also earn 5x on amextravel.com purchases.

What if I pay with points to bring the total owed below 600…checkout says a charge for 6xx will be applied with a credit of 3xx…so technically a single charge greater than 600.00. Not sure I want to risk it.

Is it applicable if taxes and fees are included in the $600+? Or does it only apply to the room rate? I don’t see it mentioned in the fine print. There’s a hotel I’m interested in that would be $615 total for three nights but the room rate is $175/night…it’s the additional taxes that make it above $600. Just curious if this offer would apply.

I hate offers like this. I don’t stay in $600/night hotels (well, at least I don’t pay cash for them), and rarely stay in the same place for more than one or two nights in a row so I don’t spend that much on any given stay.
