[Expired] Wells Fargo $200 Checking Bonus – Available Nationwide

This deal has now expired, there is another $200 Wells Fargo checking bonus and it doesn’t require a direct deposit. More information here.

Confirmed as nationwide. It seems that RI & LA zip codes won’t work but if you put in another zip it will work and then you can enter your real mailing address during sign up. YMMV if this ends up with you getting the bonus or not.

Offer at a glance

The Offer

Direct link to offer

  • Receive a sign up bonus of $200 when you open a new Everyday checking account with Wells Fargo and complete the following requirements:
    • Set up direct deposit and receive at least 3 consecutive monthly direct deposits of $500 or more within 150 days of account opening

The Fine Print

  • You cannot be:
    • A current owner on a Wells Fargo consumer checking account
    • A Wells Fargo team member
    • A recipient of a consumer checking bonus in the past 12 months (limit one bonus per customer)
  • A qualifying direct deposit is the customer’s salary, pension, Social Security, or other regular monthly income of an accumulated $500 or more, electronically deposited through the Automated Clearing House (ACH) network to this checking account by your employer or an outside agency.
  • A non-qualifying direct deposit is transfers from one account to another or deposits made at a branch or ATM
  • During this time, your new account balance must be $1.00 or more.
  • All bank account bonuses are treated as income/interest and as such you have to pay taxes on them

Geographic Eligibility

Not sure if this is geographically restricted like previous offers. I tried a few major places (Los Angeles/NYC) and they all worked whereas last time they didn’t. You have to enter your zip code when you click the link so it’s easy to tell if your area is eligible or not.

Avoiding Fees

Monthly Fees

The Everyday Checking account comes with a $10 monthly fee. Get the fee waived with one of the following:

  • 10 debit card purchases and/or payments each statement cycle from this checking account, OR
  • Direct deposits totaling $500 or more each statement cycle, OR
  • Maintain a $1,500 minimum daily balance, OR
  • Link checking account to a Wells Fargo Campus ATM or Campus Debit Card

If you have a Wells mortgage, you might be able to get a higher-level account with no fees.

Early Account Termination Fee

There is no early account termination fee.

Our Verdict

This is probably the worst variation of this offer, previous $200 deals didn’t require a direct deposit and they have offered $250 and $300 in the past as well. That being said nationwide deals like this from Wells Fargo are rare. Wells Fargo isn’t exactly strict when it comes to what counts as a direct deposit either. Another advantage of going for this bonus is that Wells Fargo usually likes you having some sort of relationship with them before approving you for a credit card. Because of all that I do recommend going for this bonus and I’ll be adding it to the best checking bonuses.

Big thanks to reader, CJ who let us know. Learn how to find bonuses and contribute to the site here.

One big weird disqualification that you missed: During this time, your new account balance must be $1.00 or more.

Finally, a nationwide bonus.

Great catch. I saw that as well. DoC, you should add that to the article in the fine print.

What ‘time’ period exactly must your balance be $1 or more? Because I just opened an account but was unable to transfer the opening required deposit until both the debit card and the PIN came in the mail, within a week of getting approved. I just now deposited the opening deposit, but would that mean I won’t get the bonus? I’ll be getting a direct deposit of $1000 plus every two weeks going forward,so in the next 150 days I’ll have met that condition.

As for the $1 minimum balance, I had no way transfer any money into the account until I got my debit card. I tried transferring from another bank account and it wouldn’t let me..

Terms state: “Your $200 bonus will be deposited into your new Everyday Checking account within 45 days after eligibility and qualifications have been met”.

Anyone else getting an error when they continue to the application? After putting in my RI zipcode, it opens up the site to start the application, but then takes me to an error page.

Looks like it really is nationwide, I never qualify for WF because the nearest branch is 300 miles away but this one worked.

Any data points on how long you need to have a banking relationship for them to approve a credit card?

TomJ
TomJ

Not sure why but I was approved for a credit card without having a banking relationship with Wells. Just now was approved for this promotion.

I think I read in the past that WF had pulled back on retail banking customers only were considered for credit lines.

Trolling credit info pulls those with good scores into the boat and then a pull to shore for regular checking/savings accounts activity assures them that the debit swipes required in their offers, retrieves even more customer data for Wells to harvest (and sell).

I tried it and got approved for the Visa Signature a few days after opening a checking account.

I currently have an Everyday checking which I earned a bonus on in March 2017. Are the any DPs on how long (or short) I should wait to open this one after closing my current one?

Mimi
Mimi

afaik, they have enforced the 12 months from last bonus so DH opened this time with his last app in Feb 2017. I closed my last everyday checking in May 2018 so I’ll open one again middle of 2019.

since a year has passed from your last closure, you may be eligible to get your bonus.

Tim
Tim

Did you use real DD? Otherwise, it’s hard to say whether it was the 12 month rule or DD not counting. Ignore what the CSR is telling you, they are just reading the fine print to see if you should get manual credit, but that doesn’t mean that the bonus would have not posted automatically with the right DD.

i did real dd and didn’t get the bonus. most probably bcoz of the 12 month rule being enforced.

Mimi
Mimi

No, I used a CU hub for ACH transfer.

This seems to have worked for me in MI. I got a confirmation message on the approval screen saying the bonus code has been attached to my account! Thanks!

i received that too and even an email but didn’t get the bonus. most probably coz of the 12 month rule now being enforced. btw i use real work dd.

RE: 10 debit card purchases and/or payments each statement cycle from this checking account. My info is provided in the context of qualifying for the $$ bonus, rather than the monthly fee waiver.

Please understand why I highlight this as I am advocating for a family member with an intellectual disability and the bonus that she is really entitled to with Wells Fargo and the offer used in February, is being held up because of some small print info that deviates from the above statement.

The debit swipes were performed using the “formula” shown above. However, there is an additional admonition that requires the swipes be credited as follows:

10 debit charges for $1 plus from account opening day 1 through day 30.

10 debit charges for $1 plus from day 31 – 60.

10 debit charges for $1 plus from day 61 – 90.

The debit spend “formula” actually used was based on 10 per statement cycle, which places her account activity just 3 days outside of ending date of “Day 90” because the first statement cycled about 2 weeks after the opening date.

The graphic shown on the target email shows calendar pages with additional comments that presents a 90-day generic requirement. It is the eye catcher. The manner in which the graphic compares with the statement cycle method AND then the specific 1-90 day directive leads to what I categorize as deceptive.

While one may never see this kind of offering with this kind of confusion, I thought I would at least share a “buyer beware” message. We are still awaiting the 7-10 business day research and a decision whether bonus offer will be honored. Thanks for reading.

While that sucks it has absolutely nothing to do with this bonus offer that is only triggered by DDs. All bank bonuses are buyer beware- if you don’t understand the fine print, don’t enter into the contract. Hopefully your fam member will come to you in the future for double checking they are understanding the bonus fine print next time. Another bank that pulls something kinda similar is Bank of the West FYI.

Does “consumer account” just mean a personal account? I have a business account with them – will I still be eligible for this bonus?

Ann
Ann

That’s correct AFAIK.

Kaung

Thanks for the find. I’m hoping I can get the personal because the only bonus I’ve ever gotten from WF was a biz account about 8 months ago. Would like to have the bank relationship in hopes of trying for Propel World soon if it’s still available. Last comments here showed success from 8/8/18.

You definitely can get both the biz and personal checking accounts as they are considered separate products.

Does anyone know how well Well they enforce the 12 month rule?

gmoney
gmoney

It’s now enforced. It didn’t used to be. I got denied last time after meeting all requirements for being within the 12 months. The good news is that it’s 12 months from receiving the bonus, not 12 months from closing your last account.

Tim
Tim

Did you set up payroll direct deposit? Otherwise it might have posted automatically.

Tim
Tim

I haven’t found concluding evidence whether they cracked down on DD requirements, or are enforcing the 12 month language.

In the past WF pretty much accepted anything as DD for the bonus, so the conclusion was that it must have been the 12 month language, because that’s what was given as the reason by the CSR. Truth is, with another source of DD it might posted automatically. It’s hard to say.

Warning: I opened the last time this came around (March?), with an NYC zip code. At the end of the application process, I received the webpage stating that the bonus offer had been applied to my account (I printed it out; thus how I know for certain). After which, I tried Ally, CapitalOne, Schwab checking, and Bluebird.

I’m still waiting to receive that bonus.

I opened everyday checking in Feb, received bonus in April and closed the acct in May. Your bonus may be long overdue, you may have to send SM to inquire about it. If their records show that you received bonus after March 2017, they may tell you you don’t qualify based on the 12 month policy. Make sure to check your records if your last bonus was past 12 months and send them proof if necessary.

Flea

Thanks! It was a good reminder because it turns out I opened new account mid-February, bleh. So that’s probably why. (Note to self: Keep better records this year!)

Just opened the account 8/21/2018. No issues whatsoever, and I’ve got atrocious credit (spent several years ill and unemployed – fighting my way back though!).

I’m in the Seattle area. Will post here again when (hopefully!) the bonus posts.

This is my first post here. Let me just say a big THANK YOU to William for putting all this information together in one super easy to to read website. You’ve literally put $900 in my pocket over the past couple of weeks with your hard work sifting through all these bank account bonus offers.

And THANK YOU to everyone posting here for sharing your experiences with different financial institutions & offers.

I don’t make much money, and the cost of living is exploding around here. $900 in bonuses for an hour or two of applying and spreadsheeting to strategize a workable direct deposit schedule goes a long way.

Thanks again to everyone for all the knowledge you’ve shared. Keeping my eyes peeled for local offers in my hopes that I can repay your kindness.

Cheers,

Issac

Thank you, Isaac. I appreciate your THANK YOU. I claim it. I wish you the best while you complete your personal comeback. 🙂

I shared what I thought would be helpful to one “someone”. I think the reminder of buyer beware is important, especially with Wells Fargo, which would operate with impunity if it wasn’t for some gov’t oversight and victims who were willing to push back.

I wish to argue with no one.
