The Offer

Direct link to offer (please note this doesn’t mention the bonus. Bonus terms were originally sent out via snail mail so this offer is targeted. It’s another matter whether that is enforced)

  • BB&T is offering a bonus of $300 when you open a new BB&T elite gold checking account. You need to open the account with the promo code AUXGB and complete one of the following requirements:
    • Maintain an average daily balance of $5,000 or more within 75 days of account opening OR
    • Complete direct deposits of $2,000 or more within 75 days of account opening

The Fine Print

  • Offer is limited to one incentive per household
  • Any account not in good standing, closed or with a balance less than or equal to zero at the time we review account eligibility (between 75-120 days of account opening) will not receive the bonus
  • All bank account bonuses are treated as income/interest and as such you have to pay taxes on them

Avoiding Fees

Elite Gold $30 Monthly

You can avoid the monthly fee on this account if you meet any of the following requirements:

  • $25,000 combined deposit balance in checking, savings, CDs, IRAs, Money Rate Savings, Investor’s Deposit Account, or investments through BB&T Investment Services, Inc.
  • $25,000 combined outstanding balance in retail loans and lines of credit3
  • $150,000 BB&T personal mortgage loan balance

Early Account Termination Fee $25

All accounts come with a $25 early account closure fee if you close them within 180 days of account opening.

Our Verdict

Main issue with this account is keeping the account fee free. You basically need $25,000 in combined deposits, that’s also enough to trigger the bonus requirement so that’s a plus. You’d need to keep the $25,000 invested until the bonus posts and then pay the $25 early account termination fee. This 75-120 days, let’s say 120 days just to be safe. This account earns 0.01% APY, so basically nothing. If you put the $25,000 into a 2% account during that period you’d earn ~$165. When you add the $25 closing fee you’re looking at a bonus that is only really $100 or so.

They have  a $150 bonus that will be better for most readers. More details on that here. For now I won’t be adding this to the best checking account bonuses.

Big thanks to reader, John M who let us know. Learn how to find bonuses and contribute to the site here.

I said this in another post. but since it’s BB&T I’ll say it again.
just a headsup – a lot of us may have participated in their $150 checking promo for using Zelle a while back, and I still haven’t seen the bonus despite having completed the requirement and contacted them several times about it.

CFPB is useful.

The terms I signed up with stated that the bonus would be deposited within 60 days from the end of the promotion March 24, 2018.

why not at least buy a 6 month CD?

Agreed. I practically had to contact the officer of the president of bb&t to get the last bonus. very unprofessional.

I got my $150 checking bonus and $10 bill pay bonuses but they take a loooong long time to post. The checking bonus took every day of the 12 weeks stated in the terms to post, but it did.

I wish I didn’t miss the $100 bonus, this one is too much of a pain to deal with.

Can you downgrade the account after you receive the bonus?

Anyone know the definition of a “new” client? Does that mean you currently don’t have any accounts with them, or does it mean you NEVER had any accounts? TIA

Does Bb&t have grace period for monthly fee?

I signed up when this was first posted, used Alliant for ACH which seemed to work (other ACH transactions went through as P2P but Alliant did not). Still no bonus yet.

Any BBT Biz checking promos around?

Keeping $25,000 invested for 6 months for $300 is obviously insane. It seems possible to avoid the fee by e.g. opening up an IRA and transferring existing investment over, but that seems probably not worth the effort.

And just paying the $150 in monthly fees for $150 profit is too much risk for too little upside, I think this is not worth it.

Agreed. This offere is a complete waste of time & money. Plenty of other places you can stash 25k into these days and get 2%

Any data points on household offer being 1 per offer type or all offers? I did a BB&T offer a few months ago that was also 1 per household ($150 or $200, forget) and if possible, I’d do this one for my wife; same address. Any input is appreciated!

Yet Another Redditor

Get a message that “Promotional Code cannot be found. Leave this field blank to continue your application without entering a Promotional Code.” when I cose “VA” for my state and “ARZFV” for the promo code.

Looks like DoC got some bad intel or Brian didn’t spill all the beans.

Out of curiosity, for those of you who did this, is there a place on the application for a refer-a-friend referral? Because they are also running a $50 for referrer and referee promo. Totally useless under most circumstances, and it has it’s own landing page, but if it can be combined with another offer, that’s an extra $50 to toss in there.

Was excited to see this for a minute, then saw the $25k balance requirement… Oops.
