Our Verdict

We just posted about a $300 BB&T bonus as well, I think this $150 bonus is better though as it’s easy to keep the account fee free and we actually have a landing page for it. Previous bonuses have been $100 so this is $50 more as well. I’ll be adding this to our best checking bonuses page as the requirements are easy to meet (no direct deposit) and it isn’t too difficult to keep the account fee free.

Big thanks to reader, Mike who let us know. Learn how to find bonuses and contribute to the site here.

Yet to get the $100 from last promo. Will try this for my SO.

It just posted two days ago for me. So about 3 months total to get the bonus.

Yep. Same here for me as well.

just a headsup – a lot of us may have participated in their $150 checking promo for using Zelle a while back, and I still haven’t seen the bonus despite having completed the requirement and contacted them several times about it.

I just checked my BB&T account and received the $100 bonus on 4/17 for the zelle promo.

Can tell the Date of account opening?

Opened acct 2/3
zelle transfers 2/9
bonus 4/17

Thanks. Wonder if you were in the first 3K folks to open using that promo.

lucky for you!

opened 2/5
zelle transfer 2/16
No bonus till now.

the $100 Zelle bonus finally posted this week!

What is the zello promo? Is that any different that the $150 bonus promo? I’m in TX. I’ll like to zelle my main account to meet the requirements for the bonus. Is that why you used Zelle, or was there some other bonus tied to Zelle?

Approved and finished the app in 5 minutes. Funded $250 on TY Premier.

Likewise with CSR

My Chase Marriott card threw a fraud alert but charges finally went through once I validated the “purchase.”
Otherwise a pretty painless account opening process with no traps (if you are in the habit of reading before clicking “next”).

Opened “Back to Basics” account online in 10 minutes, easy peasy. Used min $50 from CO360. Can’t log onto online account yet but created username/PW.

Language in one of the disclaimers said they could obtain credit information, better not be a hard pull.

Time will tell with the bonus, but no monthly fee or minimum amount makes this one very easy to wait for many months.

Did you encounter any traps for “Overdraft Protection” ?

There was one option, I read it carefully and made sure I declined it. Once I logged into my account online to check all the account settings I found a second option for overdraft protection, I did have to uncheck it. I get emails from free credit monitoring whenever I get a hard hit or new CC posted to a bureau and I have not gotten any since I opened this account yesterday.

Banks make so much money on overdraft protection it’s ridiculous. I guess most people don’t notice or care about fees like that, I certainly do.

Also oddly enough I cannot log on my online account with Firefox, I have to use Chrome. I get invalid user name/PW when using FF, but with Chrome the exact same user/pw works.

On that note, I went and found that second Overdraft option:
Click on Overdraft Review on the right and turn it off in the new pop-up window.

I’ve gottem multiple emails and a postcard recommending overdraft protection. These guys are aggressive.

I got the postcard in the mail yesterday, but no emails yet.

Declined with no explanation.

Can you still sign up for a personal checking account if you made a business checking account with bb&t in the last few months?

I would love to know too, but don’t know how to find out. Their terms are vague, and I shy away from calling. Front line CSR might give wrong information anyway, either because they don’t know and give you their best guess, or they want you to open the account (hopefully with them).

William Charles
Please update the OP as BB&T “back to basics” checking account is an option without any fees or minimum monthly balance requirements.
So, BB&T “back to basics” checking account is the best option.

So far this has been easy to open. As stated above, it doesn’t offer cc funding but I did enter my CSP card in place of debit card. We got a text for fraud alert but approved it and was able to finish the app and create online log in and pw.
They allow free personalized photo debit cards (fee if you need replacement) so I uploaded a great picture from last summer’s vacation. You could also opt for one of their stock photos or a standard card. I don’t mind that the photo might make it take longer to arrive since I don’t need it for online access.

So far it appears to be a pending purchase, not a CA.

Chase seems to very quick to throw up the fraud alert as of late, within the last year. It’s covering their butts fraud prevention, but very annoying if you don’t get the alert in time. I forget which bank it was for me, but it created quite a mess when they did this. Also Chase is very quick to deny large ACH transfers from their checking. Chase is starting to leave a bad taste in the mouths of those who deal with them regularly, and the school of public opinion can change it’s view rather quickly. Hashbrown: CSP and below cardholders lives matter!

It didn’t disallow me from opening one after putting in TX….do they enforce the PA and NJ residency?

Hi Doc,

Just received a mailer from BB&T at Texas. It seems similar offer is also available here: Promo code is ASAAT. Thanks.

Does the mailer say which accounts qualify?

Hi Doc,

Similar offer is also available in Texas: The promotional code to use is ASAAT. Thanks!

Which account qualifies in Texas?

Does anyone have the problem when opening account online? It said that it cannot verify my identity (I used my passport)

I had no issues opening online. I’m in PA and I used DL.

tx, it’s my first checking bonus received by mail

4/23/2018: $250 opening deposit funded with Citi Double Cash credit card: my cash advance was set to $0–went through as a purchase.

Unable to use Citi DoubleCash to make the opening deposit

Does anyone know if they enforce the 1 per household rule?
I’d like to try for dh too.

Did you ever try this? I am interested myself.
