The Offer

Direct link to offer

  • Citi is offering 30,000 American Airline miles when you open a new Citibank Account Package between 2/15/2019 – 4/14/2019 and complete the following requirements:
    • Spend at least $400 on your Citibank debit or ATM card within 60 days of account opening
    • Download the Citi Mobile app and log into your new account

The Fine Print

  • Customer must have a new Eligible Checking account and log into the Eligible Checking account using the Citi Mobile® App within sixty (60) days of opening the Eligible Checking Account.
  • All bank account bonuses are treated as income/interest and as such you have to pay taxes on them

Avoiding Fees

Citi Account Package $25 Monthly Fee (30,000 mile Bonus)

  • The Citibank Account Package needs $10,000 in combined average monthly balances to remain fee free. Otherwise, there is a $25 monthly fee.

Early Termination Fee

In the past, Citi has not charged any ETF, and none is mentioned for this offer.

Our Verdict

We often see this deal, but usually it’s up to 60,000 miles and it’s targeted. The bonus for 60,000 miles is harder to meet though. Citi also has a public bonus for up to $600, this is in line with the $400 bonus and you can bump that up to $500 with a direct deposit. I personally think that $500 deal is better value but it will depend on how you value American Airlines. I won’t be adding this to our best bank bonus page.

Hey Will, just saw this pop up, too: $100 amazon card at Fidelity. I remember the last Fidelity bonus went quickly.

Hi Will, looks like this offer doesn’t require the $15,000 deposit like the Citi $400 offer you mention…that makes it much easier imho.

Used your Freebird code! (Couldn’t reply in the closed thread so hit up your first comment.) Hope it works, I won’t be using a rideshare for a couple weeks FYI.

If your Lorna I got it, thanks so much!

Hmm… Lots of high required balance account bonuses becoming available. Thinking Citi $500 + TIAA Checking only + Ally. Good end of year bonuses!

Do they issue 1099 for the bonus miles?

Not if it’s like before.

IIRC, they did that for the Citigold miles bonus(es) in the past so I’ll not be surprised if shitty does it again.

If i remember correctly that was for TYP. Not for AA miles.

Phill
Phill

Nope it was for AA miles…the TYP were not subject to 1099 but the aa miles were weirdly enough.

I can confirm no 1099 for TYP, but not sure about AA. My family had 4 citigold accounts and none of us got a 1099.

Jamie
Jamie

A couple years ago, our family had two citigold accounts for which we received AA miles. Neither of us received a 1099 for the AA miles.

Multiple years ago I got a 1099 from citi for this same kind of promotion. I called and they said they were required to for bank accounts, but not credit cards. They valued the 30k or so points at $600+ dollars so had to issue the 1099. I disputed it on my 1040 tax return and no one complained.

Citi is such a PITA to actually get checking bonuses from.

I’ve had tons of pain with them, too. If you’re ever having a problem, just go straight to the CFPB. It will be resolved next to immediately in my experience.

What is CFPB? I opened this account in October and still haven’t gotten the points! Help!

In the details DoC should put how soon or how long the points take to get to the account.

Iirc from a few years ago:

*Fees were waived for a few months anyways (unstated policy)
*Bonus took almost 5 months to post (60 days to hit+90 days to credit or something like that)
*Expect the grand incompetence that is Citi when trying to see where you bonus is, if you qualified, etc. Screenshot your offer.

I have a Citi checking account that I’m afraid to close. I opened it as Citigold when I got my Prestige 3 years ago, which dropped my annual fee to $350. It’s since downgraded to a regular Citibank account. I’m thinking about closing it so I can sign up in the future for bonuses, but I’m afraid this might raise my Prestige’s annual fee to $450 again.

Greg
Greg

I canceled my Citigold account over two years ago and I still get the $350 annual fee on my Prestige card.

So you have no checking account at all to go along with your Prestige card at times?

I wonder if Citi will send out a 1099-INT for the bonus miles earned with this offer. The fine print ambiguously reads, “Taxes, if any, are customer’s responsibility”.

Emporio
Emporio

Also an important restriction in the fine print is that you “cannot be a current owner of a Citibank consumer checking account or have been an owner on a Citibank consumer checking account within the last 180 calendar days before enrollment in the 30,000 AAdvantage Miles Offer”

Commenter

Weird that DoC didn’t include this in the fine print summary.

Yep, this should really be added up top.

Hey Will, hoping to pass this to some people who may not have the $10k. How long would the account need to be open for? As in, how many $25s would be needed?
Thanks. Edit: found it myself- 90 days from completion so $75 roughly

I also think that may be a good small note in the future.

Ryan
Ryan

I don’t see a restriction for current/recent Citi checking account holders.

Am I missing something?

Emporio
Emporio

See my comment above.

Ryan
Ryan

EDIT- the restriction is in the terms/conditions you have to click on, not in the small print on the application page.

Very slick, Citi. Gonna have to close both of these for my wife and I as we are not eligible.

Jack
Jack

I got the $400 bonus in August (opened account in May). I closed that account about a month ago. Am I eligible for this bonus?

Mimi
Mimi

if they enforce this terms: “you cannot be a current owner of a Citibank consumer checking account or have been an owner on a Citibank consumer checking account within the last 180 calendar days before enrollment in the 30,000 AAdvantage Miles Offer” you are not eligible so it’s 50/50 chance you’ll get the bonus miles.

What’s the quickest/easiest way to use the debit for 375 and get cash or have it deposited back into checking without actually spending anything?

Steve
Steve

While not the highest, it does seem easier, and the last time I did this – maybe four years ago – I did not get taxed on the bonus (has that changed?). If that happens again, it would seem better than a cash bonus.

I just got an “application pending” message. Thoughts?
