Here are some of the most popular posts from over the weekend:
I was shut down by Citi in February. They closed my Double Cash and TY Preferred cards, also 2 private label (tire company) cards they apparently issued. I’d been doing around $100k MS per year on the DC card, for years. Also used WM BP.
Citi did not initially provide any explanation, but in response to my written request for one they said: “we observed account activity that is inconsistent with typical consumer usage and payments for which the source of funds could not be determined.”
They also denied my request for payout of earned cash back, by citing the program T&Cs.
I’m wondering if Citi is on some sort of customer selectivity initiative, to identify & eliminate unprofitable customers. The fact that “frequent users” of price protection seem caught up in the wave would support this theory.
That Citi shutdown post by Travel In Points is such a torture to read, with “gems” like this all over the place: “MilesPerDay recalls hearing Citi zeroing points upon shutdown, and alike him, I wasn’t going to wait out to find out. But unlike him, I actually cashed out my points (or at least it’s processing…risky move I know).”
I was completely shutdown by Citi a few months ago (late 2018). Been with them since 2004. Was not on grAAvy train. Did not MS. I did often utilize their generous price protection program though. Only lost about $400 in rewards from my double cash card (had very little thankyou points and they mistakenly, as they put it, redeemed my remaining dividend dollars). Just a reminder if you’re in this hobby, burn your cash rewards often (I saved them to use as ‘direct deposits’ for bank account bonuses) as they can be clawed back at any point.
Did you not fight for your $400?
I did. Submitted cfpb complaint to no avail. Received a letter stating something to the affect of ‘received your cfpb complaint, already mistakenly sent you your dividend dollars, definitely not sending you the double cash rewards’. Contacted Alex B (lawyer often on frequent miler), told me nothing we could do really.
I read MPD’s DC account was shutdown also where he cycled $35K CL three times, they kept $2k of his DC CB. I’m not sure if he fought for it because he admitted to push his MS activities to the limit and wasn’t surprised why he got shutdown. At least, he was able to transfer his 360K TYP that he saved.
When MSing, everything seems fine one day, but not the following day. I ALWAYS redeem my DC CBs via ACH transfer to bank soon as statement close with zero balance.
What reason did Citi give you for closing your accounts? What card accounts did you have with Citi? Examples with prices of how you often utilized their price protection program?
