    • 40,000 points after $1,000 in spend within the first three months

Card Details

  • Annual fee of $69 is not waived first year
  • 3,000 bonus points after your cardmember anniversary
  • Card earns 2x points on all Southwest purchases and 1x points on all other purchases.
  • Chase 5/24 rule does apply to this card

Our Verdict

We saw offers of 75,000 points after $5,000 in spend earlier this year. Most people like to get these Southwest cards to get enough points for the Southwest companion pass. Given how much Southwest points are worth and the fact that getting this smaller 40,000 bonus will make it harder to get a companion pass and the fact that we saw a 75,000 offer this year I don’t think this offer is particularly good. If the annual fee was waived then I could maybe see people that were prioritizing cash bonuses over travel rewards being tempted. I won’t be adding this to our list of the best credit card bonuses.

It’s also important to remember that many readers will not be eligible for this card due to the Chase 5/24 rule or because you’re a current Southwest cardholder or have received a bonus within the past 24 months. As always read these things everybody should know about Chase credit cards before applying.

Why is the companion pass so attractive? Dont you need to pay for one ticket out of two? Im guessing this is good for business travel or people that travel so much that they cant get enough free fares? Its not attractive to me because I only take one vacation per year, and I always just get two free seats.

It’s definitely great for couples that like to travel domestic

Great for short or weekend domestic trips if you travel as a couple.

As others have pointed out, it’s great for couples.

In addition to the buy-one-get-one-free effect, you also amass (at least) 125,000 Points earning the Companion Pass, which equates to roughly $2,000 in airfare and can be used to purchase the CP owner’s ticket — hence, two “free tickets.”

Assuming you travel with the same person (or switch infrequently between two travel partners), the Companion Pass essentially gets you 50% off Southwest fares, which is almost impossible for another carrier to beat.

If you fly solo mostly (or switch between 5+ travel companions, or switch between travel companions frequently), the Companion Pass isn’t that useful (or valuable) for you.

I guess so. My wife and I fly as a couple once a year. We always just get two free fares I think the companion fare is for those who travel a lot or don’t like to get too many credit cards

Ah, yes, it helps to fly at least five times per year, ideally more than ten times. Then again, some people redeem their Points for gift cards and still find it useful.

Where did this offer originate. I do not see it on the Chase site or the Rapid Rewards site. Is it open to everyone?

Signed up via referral link 3 days ago for the standard 40k points after $1k spend. SM’d Chase yesterday to see if they could match me to this new one. tl;dr I think they said yes:

“thank you for providing us a supporting link. I am pleased to inform you that I reviewed your credit card account and found that the offer you requested was 40,000 bonus points after you spend $1000.00 on purchases in the first 3 months from your account opening. You requested for a $200.00 statement credit, after making the first purchase.

Our records show you haven’t met the spending requirement and the first purchase. After you have met the required spend, please reply to this email to claim the offer.

You’ll be eligible as long as:
– You have not received a new cardmember bonus for this card in the past 24 months.
– Your account is open and not in default when we post the bonus.
– Your eligible purchases do not include balance transfers, cash advances, and cash-like charges such as traveler’s checks, foreign currency, and money orders, any checks that access your account, overdraft advances, interest, unauthorized or fraudulent charges, or fees of any kind, including an annual fee, if applicable.”

This may not be the highest offer but $200+40k points for $1,000 is a really good return on spend. I would jump on this if I wasn’t over 5/24.

Anyone have — or know of — datapoints of successfully product/promotion changing from the Priority (and its 40,000-Point bonus after $1,000 spend with $75 annual fee) to the Plus (and this new offer)?

Reaching out to Chase to see what they say — will update once they get back to me/us.

Update: Rep told me once the terms are accepted, and then again after the first purchase, the card (and bonus) are locked in. Obviously, this isn’t true, but he was a hard-no. Going to call again (and submit secure message…once that feature is fixed for us).

One brief comment which rarely gets mentioned: I feel that I am in a stronger bargaining position at retention time when I have paid an annual fee for the prior year. Many phone reps from various banks in renewal discussions have cited the fact of whether I paid or had the fee waived. So, I actually prefer this offer to, say, a alternative promotion of something like 40K miles and a $125 statement credit with the annual fee waived.
