Anyone who’s moved out of state for bank(s) had success with keeping some sort of account open so that you can still churn the checking/savings? I heard Citizen does that, wondering if it’s common in general.

Interestng note in the terms……..

“Offer not valid if shared by friends or social connections”

The easy way to avoid that is to cut down on the URL and go here instead: https://www.wsfsbank.com/personal/banking/client-offer/.

Seems like they would still consider it a shared link. A lot of times I will actually google search bank offers instead of following links for that very reason. That way there is no way they can deny me the bonus because I “wasn’t the intended recipient”
In this case I was unable to find this promotion anywhere by searching for it.
I am out of footprint so I can’t apply anyway, but that wording makes me wonder if they won’t be eager to deny the bonus to anyone they can

Chris,

If I end up applying, getting approved and then denied for the bonus for that reason, I could always argue that Che is not a friend or a social connection of mine. 😀

for people using treasury direct as DD, are you doing 4 week t-bills or using the certificate of indebtedness (CofI)? I’ve been doing CofI knowing they’re 0%, so losing that interest for 5-7 days depending on factors. I’m just curious what other people are doing.

Gadget 🕵️‍♂️ Bank Bonus Geek 🔗

Depends on the bonus offer. If you need multiple months of DD, it’s easier to just set up T-bill purchases and redemptions all at once, and be done.

If it’s a bonus offer that only needs one DD, and the faster it gets there, you get the bonus sooner, C of I probably makes more sense.

Very likely works the same as a “DD” either way, but it’s just more work to have to go back into Treasury Direct to do the cash out with C of I. person

That makes sense, it does take time to login and cashout each time. I think I’ll be adopting this approach going forward.

I am worried that one day they might decide to shut down people who only use the C of I for DD. That’s pretty much what I do.

Valid concern, I think. It’s not supposed to be a hub account (then again, I am not sure banks would like to be considered a hub either). I certainly wouldn’t start out using Treasury Direct C of I before at least doing some sort of T-bill, I-bond, etc. P1 & P2 did I-bonds.

I personally think most people get hemmed up by adding newly opened bank accounts, and that triggers the issues. Remember when they required a medallion stamp to make changes? Just because they got rid of the requirement doesn’t mean the completely relaxed scrutiny.

My P3 was the most recent Treasury Direct account here. Waited 4 days and then bought a 3 T-bill’s using the initial account that was linked during opening.

11/22/24 Opened Treasury Direct & linked to a hub account (Langley FCU – Acct opened 10/25/24, so the hub account was a month old)
11/25/24 Wings account opening funding posted <– this says to me the acct is ready to receive!
11/26/24 Added target destination account to Treasury Direct. (Wings CU – Account opened 11/22/24)
11/26/24 Bought a 4 week, 8 week, and 13 week T-bill set to pull from Langley and deposit to Wings. (needed 3 months of DD’s)
04/20/25 Wings: 2024 SEPT PROMO-CHECKING $400 bonus

99% of the time I’ve used 4 week T-Bills and that’s worked out very well for me. Once or twice I was crunched for time so I used my C of I account but I try to use that sparingly. Why have you chosen the C of I option?

I keep a rotating series of 4-week bills using a HYSA as a reservoir. You can switch the destination until a week before maturity, which is easier than C of I and just about as fast.

You miss 0 days of interest and sometimes you double dip a day (or 4). Unused bills just cycle back to the reservoir HYSA.

The difference in effective APYs between bills and the best HYSAs is close to a wash if you pay state income tax. The t-bills are typically a little better for me and early DD puts them over the top. OTOH the funds are tied up for 5 weeks.

Initiating zero-day (or better!) transactions with T-direct means you can couple it with a HYSA that would otherwise make a poor hub. Just beware, some banks may still enforce the old 6 withdrawals/month limit.

Be careful loading funds into the C of I! I loaded 4k into it and they froze my TD account and it took 8 weeks to unlock and a form 5444.

1st page of the online application:

Requirements for the account owner:

  • 18 Years or Older
  • U.S. Citizen
  • Resident of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina or Tennessee

And, it’s targeted, so you need to find a code.
